Mission: Chapter V: The Calm Before The Storm
Location: I.S.S. Amelia
Timeline: 238702.27

[ISS Asha - 2410]

Captain Mavis Vermillion coughed on the smoke as the Cheyenne Class Warship shook violently under the constant fire from the other Terran Ships. She stumbled over dead bodies of her crew as she made her way down the corridor. The bridge had been destroyed, completely blasted from the hull. She had given her crew the orders to abandon ship and watched in horror as their escape pods were picked off quickly by barrages of phaser fire, obviously the Terran Empire showed her crew no mercy.

It wasn't her fault that this had happened. Granted she had stolen the ship and posed as a Terran Captain using her father influence. But having a half Human half Trill child growing within her had caused these Captains to come knocking. Apparently fear that Humans and Aliens could live together peacefully was so strong it warranted wiping out an entire starships crew.

"I hope this works" she coughed as she powered up the transporter. "Screw this universe and everyone in it!" she said as her fingers ran across the console. The console sparked a few times and the conduit in the wall ruptured bursting into flame. However the transporter was still operational. She ran her hand over her exposed belly as she programmed it to give five seconds until interphasic transport. "Don't worry, I'll protect you!" she muttered before the lights of the transporter caught her.

Moments later the ISS Asha was engulfed in a massive explosion leaving nothing of the Cheyenne Class Starship but debris and the scattered remains of her fallen soldiers.

[ISS Amelia - 2387 - Prime Universe]

The transporter pad suddenly began to power up without warning as an incoming signal and program overrode the control console. A few seconds later something began to emerge on the pad, it took a longer than usual as if it was struggling to fully materialise. After nearly a minute the form of a short woman emerged. Mavis Vermillion stood there seemiling dazed, dressed in a Terran Captains Uniform circa 2410.

Her eyes fluttered before her legs gave way and she dropped to the floor unconscious.

The sudden arrival of the unconscious young woman in a Terran Captain's uniform had caused confusion all over the Amelia. She had been taken to sickbay, where it was soon determined that she was uninjured, although it was clear she had just escaped battle. Captain Mannerheim had asked to be kept updated on her, and a security officer was assigned to keep an eye on her, just in case.

Freya had headed straight to sickbay as soon as she had been informed that their visitor was waking up. As she entered, the on-duty medical officer approached her. "Captain. We've checked her all over. She is indeed Terran, but there are two things you should be aware of."

The Captain raised an eyebrow. "And those would be, doctor?"

The doctor tapped his badge and activated his holo-PADD, displaying a medical scan. "She's been temporally displaced from twenty-three years in the future. And she's three months pregnant. With a hybrid."

"I see." Freya carefully studied the scan. "A Terran-Trill hybrid? The Captain must have been a bit careless in her entertainment. Have you been able to identify her?"

"Yes, sir. Captain Mavis Vermillion, of the I.S.S. Asha. Listed as executed for treason in 2410, according to our files."

The Captain frowned. Her sister had, for a time, served as the executive officer on the Asha under a rogue captain of that name while searching for her, she recalled. Of course, the details of that were not part of the official record. She nodded. "Very well. I shall speak to her. In private."

The doctor nodded and dismissed the PADD, before signalling at the security officer to give the Captain and their visitor some privacy.

Freya walked over to the bed where Vermillion was returning to consciousness, and sat down on a stool. "Captain Vermillion," she said, smiling gently. "Welcome to the I.S.S. Amelia."

Mavis seemed to not like the fact that she was on a Terran Ship. "A Terran Vessel. Are you here to finish the job?" she asked simply. "Obviously my transporter trick didn't do what I wanted it to" she muttered to herself. "I guess I'm your prisoner then..." she sighed.

Freya held up her hand. "Let's not be hasty." Vermillion did not appear to be aware that she had been displaced across time and universes. "I am Captain Freya Mannerheim. I believe you know my sister, Sora."

Maving blinked a few times, her head was still not completely clear from what she had gone through. "Yes I did" she replied. "Commander Sora Mannerheim was my First Officer on board my ship, the Asha. Is she here? I ordered her to the escape pods with the rest of the crew" she asked looking around the bay hopefully. "Speaking of which..." she looked at Freya. "I don't recognise your uniform Captain. Whom do you answer to?"

Mannerheim smiled. "She never told me she actually used the surname as well for a while. Sora escaped the destruction of the Asha. She always was absolutely certain that you had been killed. The official records have you as executed for treason. So, I would say your sentence has been served. Not that it matters, anyway. I take it you attempted to escape the destruction of the Asha by means of an interdimensional transport? If that was your aim, congratulations on your success. However, there was a little slip. You didn't just cross into another universe, you also travelled through time. Welcome to the year 2387."

"The transporter must have been damaged in the battle" Mavis sighed. "So, I'm in the alternate universe and in the past. How come you know of me?" she asked curiously. "If I remember my temporal mechanics correctly, you shouldn't know who I am yet"

Freya chuckled. "Very observant. I was born in 2370. Do I look seventeen years old to you? No, Captain, you are not the only time traveller here. You are on a timeship. The I.S.S. Amelia, registry NCC-1939-F, first commissioned in November 2827 as the I.S.S. Admiral Yamamoto, registry NCV-8843-A, recommissioned in September 2828. A few days ago, actually. Now the reason we are here, in this universe, in this time, is highly classified. So I can't tell you anything about it."

She tapped her badge and brought up her own holographic PADD, showing Mavis' file. "It says on your service record that you stole the I.S.S. Asha and declared yourself her Captain, promoting yourself from the rank of Lieutenant, but your father's influence with the admiralty made sure you were not charged with treason at the time. So, what happened that you ended up being executed as a traitor after all? I assume it is something to do with the child you are carrying?"

Mavis sighed. "Its most likely the soul reason" she replied as she placed both hands on her exposed midriff. "You see, I was in a relationship with someone whom I have been in love with for so many years, well, technically, his symbiot" she began to explain. "His first host that knew me was killed for getting too close to me. However he managed to save the symbiot and transfer to another host. Therefore we kind of picked up from where we left of, even if it was a slightly different man. He still was mine" she told her closing her eyes.

"Someone betrayed my crew once it was discovered that I was pregnant with his child. For some reason there was some sort of fear regarding hybrid children. After the Empire was nearly destroyed by one, Emporor Spock, they have been outlawed since" Mavis told her. "Naturally, I was declared a traitor for wanting a child of my own with a man I loved. Thats why they came after me, thats why they destroyed my ship. To stop another abomination from a Terran being brought into the universe" a smirk slowly emerged across her face. "What they don't know, is that I got away. I have my own intentions now. I have something more precious to protect"

Freya simply nodded. "The Empire is many things, but they are not lenient. I experienced that myself often enough when I was a cadet. One day, I'll get my revenge. I understand your motivations, though. Love can make you do things you would never have considered otherwise. Like my sister abandoning a safe career and hiring on with a traitor, for example."

She closed the PADD. "You will be relieved to hear that both you and the child have come out of your transport completely unharmed, as far as our medical equipment can detect. The only question now is, what do you intend to do with your newfound freedom?"

"I believe that the Empire will have discovered that I somehow escaped" Mavis sighed. "They will be after me for the rest of my life. I highly doubt that I can hide from them for long. I have no idea when or when they may appear to finish what they started". She paused for a few moments. "I need to keep a low profile whilst I raise this child. I intend to prove to her that there is much more to this existence than just blood on the edge of your blade" she explained. "But I can't be anywhere where I may run into my counterpart here. That would be hard to explain"

She relaxed back into the bed slightly. "Frankly, I have no idea. I could go anywhere, but I'm at a loss. I don't know this universe. I don't know whats out there and I can't return to mine. I'm not risking my child anymore" she paused again and looked at Freya. "But I need to feel useful, I'm not just going to sit on a planet being a single mother. I have valuable skills for any crew, but not Starfleet. I need something more... off the radar. If you catch my drift?"

Freya smiled. "Why would you think the Empire would know you escaped?" She brought up the PADD again. "They haven't found out in over 400 years. I think you're safe. As for doing something useful? I have an idea about that. Serving on this ship is not suitable, for a great many reasons. However, there is anther option. In our current operation, we are working very closely with a Romulan privateer vessel, the Ourainavassa. Well, I say Romulan. Part of the crew certainly is, and it's a Romulan-built ship, but its commander is a hybrid and the XO is human. The counterpart of my own XO, for that matter. I think they are in need of a tactical officer."

Mavis pondered for a few moments. "Would they accept me?" she asked simply. "I might have been a Terran Captain, and I know how to handle a weapons console. But I'll be honest, I'm more of a science officer than Tactical" she paused for a few seconds. "Although..." she ran a hand across her belly again. "If it protects this one, and they're willing to allow me to have her on board, I can easily teach myself again"

"Don't worry, Mavis," the Captain replied, intentionally not referring to Mavis by rank. "I can arrange the introductions for tomorrow. According to the doctor, you should rest for the rest of today. I am sure you'll fit right in with their crew."

"This is happening all.. very fast for me as you may understand. Only this morning I was standing on my own bridge giving orders to what I thought was a loyal crew" she told her softly. "I didn't think the day would end like this, in another reality, in another time..."
