Mission:
Chapter VII: Into the Storm
Location: Laboratory/Daisy's quarters.
Today would have been Annabel Stephenson (Aaliyah bat Reuven)’s 30th birthday.
Before she passed, she asked me to give her favourite character her happy ending. It took me a long time to think of what to write. Longer to write it. Writing as Daisy Stanier is something I never wanted to do.
This is dedicated to you, Aaliyah. I hope this is what you wanted for Daisy.

“For fuck’s sake, Skylar. SHE LOVES YOU. What don’t you understand?” said Batsheva.
All this time, Skylar had never thought she was enough for Daisy. She was perfect. She was the kindest, sweetest and most beautiful woman she’d ever seen. For years, Skylar could not accept who she was. Daisy came into her life. She indulged in her sexuality. She pushed her away. Skylar didn’t think she could give Daisy what she deserved. She didn’t think she could be a mother figure for Azalea. The little girl who said Skylar was her hero.
“Do you think this is easy?”
“Do I think what’s easy, Skylar?” Batsheva asked. She and Shira had, nearly every night, listened to Daisy pour her heart out. Tell them how she wished Skylar felt the same way. “Do you think it’s easy for Shira and I to listen to Daisy crying every night? She loves you. She loves you so much she cries herself to sleep every single night. You aren’t stupid, Skylar. You’re a fucking genius. How can you not see it?”
Skylar herself had cried every night. Every night since she and Daisy first had sex. It was the best night of her life, but she felt a sense of guilt. Guilt she’d made Daisy feel the way she did. Skylar didn’t feel she was worthy to be loved by Daisy, or be her lover. “She’s too good for me, Batsheva. You and Shira made it abundantly clear.”
“Prove us wrong.” replied Batsheva. Her tone now calmer, she hoped Skylar may lower her defences. Trust her. Open up. “Daisy loves you. I know you love her too, Skylar. There’s nothing wrong with being a lesbian. It’s who I am, I’m proud of it. So is Shira.”
The synth knew around five years ago she was a lesbian. She wasn’t ready to admit it, she wanted to find her way in the galaxy. Work out her purpose. After a while, Skylar forgot about it. It was only when Daisy arrived when her repressed feelings came back. She wanted to hold Daisy. To be the one she could rely on. Be the one who held her when she slept. Emotion crept in. It quickly overwhelmed.
“I realised five years ago. I’d been online for just over a year.” began Skylar. “I didn’t really think about it too much. I wanted to work out what my destiny was. Astronomy called out to me, then medical science. I forgot about it, buried it. I studied every single book, whatever I could get hold of to further my knowledge. Being happy never crossed my mind. I thought I was created to serve some sort of purpose. Love, happiness. They were pieces from another puzzle.”
Batsheva listened. She and Shira, especially Shira, had been critical of Skylar. Now was when she began to understand why she had gone into her shell. She hoped Shira would, too.
“I met Daisy, a year ago. Maybe. She was the most beautiful woman I’ve ever seen. It opened this, this box of feelings. I’d locked it, buried it. I didn’t understand why one person could dig it up and open it. Then, six months later. I understood why.”
“Because you love her, Skylar. I understand why.” Batsheva said, her tone hushed. Sensitive. “Don’t deny yourself the chance to be happy. All you have to do is tell her.”
Skylar nodded, tears flowing. For the first time, admitting her love for Daisy. Her shoulders no longer felt heavy. Burdened. “When we first slept together, it was the best night of my life. I didn’t want to let her go, but I could lose her if it didn’t work. That’s why I never wanted to love anyone, especially Daisy. I didn’t want to be in love with her. I didn’t want to lose her. I can’t lose her. But how can I not love her, Batsheva?”
“Go and tell her, Skylar.”
The synth stood up, composed herself. She knew where Daisy would be. In her quarters, having read her sister a bedtime story.
“Thank you, Batsheva.” said Skylar. She wiped her tears away.
Batsheva nodded. Skylar departed for her destination.
-
In her quarters, Daisy sat on her bed. Bored. Fed up. Lonely. She didn’t even know why she was on Ourainavassa anymore. Raven was gone, the closest thing she’d ever had to another mother. Gone. Most of the time, Skylar was cold. Apart from when they fucked. The woman she loved used her for sex. If not for Azalea, her love for Skylar, Daisy considered she wouldn’t have a point existing.
“Go away.” said Daisy, as her chime rang.
Skylar rang again. “No.”
“Fuck’s sake.” thought Daisy. She’d just got comfortable.
The door opened, Daisy in her pyjamas. She wasn’t happy to see Skylar. Unsurprisingly.
“What do you want, Skylar? Azalea is asleep.”
Skylar knew this, but it couldn’t wait. “I know, I’m sorry. Can I come in? Please?”
She thought about it. Decision made, Daisy stood to one side.
“You have five minutes. Then I want you to leave.” said Daisy, Skylar walking past.
Skylar entered Daisy’s quarters. She stood. She thought about what to say. This moment was six months in the making. She wanted to get it right. If she got it wrong, it could cost her the woman she’d loved since she first saw her. No. This had to be absolutely perfect. They had to be exactly the right words.
“I’m sorry I treated you the way I did. You gave me the best night of my life, I treated you in the worst way possible. I pushed you away when you try to make me feel loved. I don’t deserve your forgiveness, or your love. To tell you the truth, I’ve never thought I was good enough for you. You’re beautiful, inside and out. Perfection doesn’t exist, but you are perfect. I didn’t think a machine could ever feel…love. Then, I met you. I realised what love is, what it means. How it feels. I realised my purpose isn’t astronomy, or healing people. They’re just things I do. My purpose is to love you so much it hurts. To be with you, to take care of you. To be there for Azalea, too. Daisy, I love you.”
“So you don’t think I can feel love, Skylar?” replied Daisy. She would normally feel insulted. But this time, she didn’t. It was Skylar. She was only just learning to make sense of who she was. “I can. I do. Yes, you and I were created by different people. But it doesn’t mean I lack the ability to feel love and understand what it is.”
Skylar nodded. “I do, Daisy. I’m sorry. I just…I don’t understand why you love me.”
“I’ve never loved anyone but you, Skylar.”
Daisy walked up to Skylar, leaned in for a kiss. Her lips met Skylar’s. Skylar’s lips pressed back, her hands around Daisy’s waist, holding her close. Skylar kissed Daisy, sweetly, tenderly. Electricity, love flowed between them. Intense love. Adoration. For the first time in her life, Daisy felt safe. In the arms of the woman she loved. The only person she’d ever loved in this way.
The kiss continued. Skylar took the lead, with tender, slow presses of the lips. Reality around them slowed down. Stopped. This moment was forever theirs. Their first kiss, subsequent sexual encounter was lustful. Like each one afterwards. This was tender, sensual. Perfect. Skylar didn’t want the kiss to end. She wanted it to last for eternity. It felt like an eternity to machines. But, in reality, it was half an hour.
“I want you forever.” whispered Daisy. Skylar held her close, one arm around her waist. The other across her back, the hand at the end of it rested against the back of Daisy’s head.
Skylar replied. “Me too, beautiful. Me too.”
-
“I could get used to this.” said Daisy, her hand held in Skylar’s. Fingers intertwined. She’d offered herself to Skylar, but she declined. Politely. Skylar felt sex wasn’t necessary, it would ruin the moment. Daisy respected that.
“Me too.”
Her sexuality finally accepted, Skylar felt free. Unburdened. Liberated. Admitting her never ending, undying love for Daisy had led to this beautiful, tender moment. Daisy would cherish it forever. The moment which had been coming for a long time. Too long. Was it worth waiting for? Absolutely. It was special. Skylar would also cherish it forever. She lay on her side, facing Daisy. She was cute. Too cute. “I love you, Daisy.”
“I love you too, Skybear.”
